Our press release can be found here:
Dear media representatives,
on Monday, 5.11.2018, CopWatch invited Leipzig to creative neighbourly protests against the establishment of the first Saxon weapons prohibition zone in Leipzig’s Eisenbahnstraße.
250 people demonstrated colourfully, satirically, with homemade signs and through speeches against surveillance, repression and racism.
The strengthening of police presence and personal controls associated with the weapons ban zone is not a solution to the problems of the district. Above all, the visible problems will only be moved to other parts of the city. Particularly against the background of the new Saxon police law, the mass collection of personal data, which is so justified, is problematic: from now on, personal data may be collected and possessions checked and recorded without justified suspicion. This is also a gateway for racial profiling, i.e. the control of people who are perceived as foreign and to whom a higher affinity for crime is ascribed. This ignores both precarious living conditions and the lack of residence permits as original reasons.
The demonstration should be an impulse for further debate between different initiatives and residents to find social solutions to existing problems. CopWatch Leipzig has been preparing the establishment of the weapons prohibition zone since the beginning of the year. „It is a concern to us not to leave people alone who are affected by discrimination by state institutions. In addition, we want to clarify the rights towards the police and encourage not affected people to accompany controls critically. „says activist Nora Liebert.
